About Miracle Word
Martin Luther King lived the last two and half years of his life deeply depressed. He was guilt ridden, exhausted, burdened by an array of perplexing administrative issues, and uncertain as to whether or not the Civil Rights movement would continue forward. He was a humble man, an incredibly gifted preacher, and struggled to meet excruciating expectations. He worked for the sake of Kingdom; he lived believing in everlasting life. He was a revolutionary without a sword. He believed in Jesus, and he revolted against the prevailing culture of his day.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a pastor, a theologian, a martyr, and a sinner. He was a genius. Arrested by the Gestapo in 1943, he spent the last two and half years of his life in prison. He saw the church of his day become corrupted by the lure of political power and forsake its true love—Jesus. Before he was sent to the gallows by Adolph Hitler, he wrote numerous books, including Discipleship. In his correspondence from prison he wrote in Letters and Papers from Prison that the church exists for the sake of others. Or as the Scripture of Hebrews says, “So let's go outside, where Jesus is, where the action is . . .” (Hebrews 13:13). Bonhoeffer was a revolutionary and a father of the modern day Missional Movement.
These two men are widely known, King more than Bonhoeffer, and neither sought the attention they received, neither desired a significant role—both were chosen by God. Both fought against notoriety and achievement. Both were unexpectedly caught up in a Revolution that was part of God’s breaking through of culture with the astonishing love of Jesus—we too are being called to revolutionize the world, and as Mother Teresa, do “Small things with great love.”
The following pages are a guide to the Words and the Stories of Jesus of Nazareth, who became flesh and blood, lived as a carpenter, traveled the countryside as a preacher, a healer, and a prophet, His Word/Life brought a New Covenant to the world. Jesus did not come for the sake of us keeping the status quo or for our own comfort. In Matthew, Jesus says, “Don't think I've come to make life cozy. I've come to cut . . .” (Matthew 10:24). Jesus has given us the true representation of Who God Is: The Great I Am, the Great Servant, the Great Lover of souls, the Great Forgiver, who is passionately seeking His children—that’s all his children—even the ones in-carcerated, in-hospitable, in-decent, and those who live in-suburbia, who are cautiously in-disposed.
Jesus died owning a robe. His life was, and is, a stark contrast to: death, oppression, luxury, injustice, and illness. His revolution shocked the church of His day, and brought faith out from under the confines of religion and into a new community—The Kingdom. He is The Center of Creation. He is the Victor, and He is at odds with the conventions of life. He wants you to join Him in changing the world. May you find that Jesus is finding you to join His Revolution.
Psalm 119:139 says “Every word you give me is a Miracle Word.” “MW” is Scripture, the gift of God to us. “Revolution” is the Miracle Word of God made known in Jesus.
